"When I began a few years ago surface-searching for artifacts, I was skeptical at first.  I figured, with all the modern technology, and professional archaeologists out there, not much was left for the hobbyist.  Fortunately, I was wrong....  About several things.  Initially, when I thought about arrowheads etc.., I pictured spearheads the Indians used in those John Wayne movies I grew up watching with my grandparents.  However, these artifacts are mostly from the Early Inhabitants of North America that arrived thousands of years ago either from the Bering Strait, or from the South American hemisphere.  How many thousands?  I am researching that. In the meantime though, there are multitudes of ancient sites that have been examined, looted, protected and destroyed by modern man, and yet, there are a multitude of sites that are still undiscovered.  You simply need to get a map, do some research, and put "miles on your dogs."
